Plastic Bag Recycling at Lincoln

In honor of Earth day we want to share with you one of the ways our students are helping our environment. This year our Heroes of the Earth Club chose to do a plastic bag drive. For several weeks our club researched ways that plastic bags harm the environment. We then shared a presentation with the whole school at our monthly team rally. We challenged classrooms to bring in bags for two weeks.

Over 4,500 bags came in; enough to circle the track 6.5 times which is 1.2 miles. The winning class was Ms. Engelhardt's 4th grade class.  They received cookies baked by Mrs. Clickner and reusable grocery bags donated by Meijer. In keeping these bags out of landfills and the environment, we are keeping our land and water cleaner and preventing unnecessary deaths of animals due to the ingestion of plastics.

To build on this success, we plan to continue to collect and recycle plastic bags all school year with the support of Meijer. Beginning next year, we'll have a bag recycling bin in our office lobby so that students and their families will be able to continue to help our environment and save our wildlife.
