Senior Artist: Catherine Kilvington

Catherine Kilvington is a senior at BTVS.  She is an extremely gifted artist who continues to impress in various different mediums including fashion.  We asked Catherine some questions about what makes her so unique and successful as an online learner.  Here is what she shared with us:

I joined BTVS at the beginning of the fourth marking period last year (my Junior year).  I decided to join BTVS because high school was becoming increasingly hard to get through and I was struggling with bullying and keeping my grades up after having missed a bit of school.  My favorite thing about BTVS is that I can do it anytime I want and I am able to work it around my own schedule.

During my spare time, I enjoy video games like Pokemon, Super Smash Bros, League of Legends etc. I also enjoy reading and art.  My family is pretty much just my mom and I, unless you include my two cats, snake, and hamster. My grandparents are also around a lot, helping out and supporting me in my goals.

I practice cosmetology at Bayshire Beauty Academy.  I chose cosmetology as my future career because I am a creative person and I wanted a job that would allow me to be who I want to be and express my creativity in an artistic way. I also liked the idea that cosmetology is something that never goes away and that I can even be my own boss if that's what I want.  My favorite thing about cosmetology is how it is always changing and there is always something that can be learned, whether it be a social aspect or maybe some new product or trend.  I plan to start small at a place where I make a set pay and can build a clientele and hopefully after a few years, I'll build up enough that I can begin renting a chair and making my own hours.

My art has always been about expressing myself and helping to really show the sort of person I am. I've done my share of realism, but I prefer a more cartoonish and stylized look, I find it more challenging and fun to make as you can choose how expressive and what to really bring out in the art. I run an online art portfolio; http://catherinekilvingtonartportfolio.blogspot.com/

I hope to continue my art for the rest of my life, even if I'm only able to sell it once in a while or just make it for fun, but I have already started selling my art and doing commissions for others.

Cosmetology usually takes up most of my week as I go full time and spend 5-7 hours a day at Bayshire. I tend to save schoolwork for during the weekend, which is never an issue since I work a bit faster anyway. I attend the art class at Studio 23 on Tuesdays after Bayshire and I also try my best to fit art in wherever I can, sometimes if I'm not busy, I will just pull out the sketchbook I carry and start doodling.
