We have another Athlete up for MLive's Athlete of the Week! Vote for Alli Caldwell https://www.mlive.com/highschoolsports/2024/09/bay-city-athlete-of-the-week-salutes-fall-sports-standouts-for-sept-18.html ALLI CALDWELL, JOHN GLENN Caldwell can’t be counted out on the golf course for John Glenn. When things aren’t going her way, she has a knack for turning the beat around and making something positive happen. “She puts a lot of time and effort into getting better at the sport,” coach Pete Remington said. “She has a great attitude and doesn’t let a bad swing make for a bad hole and doesn’t let a bad hole make for a bad round. She has grit.” The junior carded a 49 at The Nightmare to earn medalist honors in a dual win over Ogemaw Heights. Way to go Alli 💙🤍

Congratulations to Landon Kogelman ⚽🏈 https://www.mlive.com/highschoolsports/2024/09/john-glenn-has-a-senior-leader-who-can-boom-the-ball-with-the-best-of-em.html BANGOR TOWNSHIP, MI – Landon Kogelman’s powerful leg often leaves people buzzing. And yet, when John Glenn soccer coach Brian Scherzer rattled off the attributes that Kogelman brings to the No. 15-ranked Bobcats, leg strength was well down the list. Scherzer values Kogelman’s savvy that makes him a top defender and aggression that makes him an offensive weapon. He appreciates the attitude that makes him a good leader and the accountability that makes him a strong captain. Then, of course, there’s that leg. That wondrously powerful leg. “Like a kicker on the football team, he can send shots from 35 yards out and put them on the frame,” Scherzer said. “He’ll be at a spot where they’re not expecting a shot and all of a sudden he’s sending a laser at the net.” Kogelman’s all-around resume and value to his team helped him earn MLive Bay City Athlete of the Week honors in an online poll of readers. He garnered 36.3 percent of the 47,596 ballots cast to edge Pinconning soccer player Landen Enciso at 30.7 percent. Seven of the 10 fall sports athletes on the poll drew more than 1,000 votes of support. Kogelman, who actually does double as the kicker for the football team, has been a key figure in a stunning season for the John Glenn boys soccer team. The Bobcats are rolling with a 13-0-1 record while making a bid for the program’s first league championship since 2005. As a holding midfielder, he carries plenty of value on both ends of the field. A defensive player by nature, he’s long had the ability to thwart an opposing attack. But his offensive skills continued to blossom, and the Bobcats aren’t about to let that talent go to waste. “He always played a defensive position, but he’s got such skill that he’s not afraid to jump up in the attack,” Scherzer said. “We kind of took the leash off him and said ‘If you see a scoring chance, you take it.’ And when he sees it, he goes.” A four-year varsity performer, Kogelman earned all-Tri-Valley Conference Red and all-Bay County honors as a junior. When he returned for his senior campaign, it was clear that he was ready to stand at the forefront of the team. “As much as he brings with skill, he provides even more with leadership and attitude,” Scherzer said. “His work ethic is second to none. He’s doing all the things you need to do as a captain. “If you don’t have a good leader on the team, it’s tough. He knows how to work with everybody. If we’re having a rough game, he keeps the spirits up and keeps our heads in the game.” Kogelman’s mighty leg made him an obvious candidate for the football team as well. In Glenn’s 39-8 victory over Essexville Garber on Friday, he was a perfect 4-for-4 on PAT kicks and boomed a 37-yard field goal. But while he steps on the football field for very specific duties, he’s stays on the soccer pitch for a wide range of responsibilities. And the Bobcats are banking on him to come through in every phase of the game. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve taken him out of a game in four years,” Scherzer said. “He’s such an asset on the field. He gives us 80 solid minutes every game, so you always want to leave him out there.” Kogelman leads Glenn into a key TVC Red matchup with Frankenmuth at home at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Congratulations to Garrett Buzzard 🏈For winning MLive's Player of the Week for week 1! Senior QB cuts loose, rekindles old swagger to lead turnaround at Glenn 💙🤍 BANGOR TOWNSHIP, MI – Garrett Buzzard has always had an aggressive mindset at quarterback. But he hasn’t always unleashed it. And the John Glenn football team loved what they saw in Week 1 when he finally went on the attack. “We still talk about the swagger he had on JV,” Glenn coach Jon Horton said. “He was a gunslinger, to the point he’d make you pull your hair out sometimes. But we’ve been begging for him to bring that swagger again. “He came up to me in the second half and said ‘The swagger is back, Coach!’” Buzzard brought that attitude onto the field after halftime, leading the Bobcats on a stirring rally as they charged back from a 30-0 deficit to take a 33-30 lead. The game got away as Ortonville Brandon pulled off a 43-40 victory, but Glenn had found something it intends to hold onto. “Garrett’s history is when he’s hot, he’s hot and when he’s cold, he’s cold,” Horton said. “For him to start cold then come out in the second half and play like that was huge for our team.” Buzzard completed 19 of 38 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns, triggering the epic comeback and earning MLive Bay City Player of the Week. The senior garnered 55.1 percent of the ballots cast in the online poll, edging Ogemaw Heights running back Calvin Marshall at 34.0 percent. Buzzard’s passing total nearly equaled his output from all of last season, when he spent three games as the varsity starter. He never truly cut loose a year ago. But when Glenn installed a new, up-tempo, attack-minded offense this season, it tapped into the approach Buzzard brought to the field as a sophomore. The Glenn coaches challenged him to rekindle that way of thinking all summer while he waged an open battle for the starting QB duties. After struggling in the first half of Week 1 – like the rest of his team – he seemed to recall the approach that serves him best. “We had a quarterback competition all summer, and I really think that helped him,” Horton said. “He faced some adversity, but he stepped up to it and won the job. “We gave Garrett goals for what we needed from him to win the job, and he surpassed all of them.” As the lone senior starter on offense – on a roster that is heavy with sophomores – Buzzard is being counted on to provide leadership. He took those responsibilities on his shoulders in the second-half outburst and set a tone for the season ahead. LET'S GO BOBCATS 🐾
